Zoom on pollen and its properties for your horse?

It tends to make us cry or scratch our throats... but pollen is much more than an allergen announcing the arrival of spring. It is also and above all a concentrate of nutrients particularly precious for our health as well as that of our horses.

Ideal for boosting your horse's immune system, giving it renewed vitality and facilitating its convalescence after an illness, pollen is an excellent natural ally to introduce into your animal's diet.

We present you its main benefits as well as our advice to make your horses benefit from it .

What is bee pollen?

We all know about the origin and the origin and usefulness of pollen. But let's do a little reminder.

Consisting of small seeds,it is collected by bees from the stamens (the male reproductive organs of a flower). They then bring them back to their hives to feed on them.

But when the bees fly away with the pollen in their basket, seeds can escape and land on the female reproductive organs (pistil) of another flower. This is called the pollination phenomenon, on which nature (and we) are extremely dependent.

When it comes to pollen, not all are equal. A distinction must be made between anemophilous pollen (pollen carried by the wind), which is also the most allergenic, and entomophilous pollen (pollen fertilized by insects), which is of interest here.

For the record, the pollen brought back by the bees in their hives is then mixed with yeast and lactic ferments from the nectar of plants.

The latter is returned to us thanks to beekeepers, who collect it directly from the hives. We know it mainly in its dried form (small golden seeds). But its fresh version has become very popular in recent years.

Heralded as a superfood - due to its richness in nutrients and antioxidants - pollen is now reaching our plates, and even our horses' feeders.

What is the composition of pollen for horses?

Bee pollen provides a wide range of nutrients that are essential for healthy hair. Thus, we find in its composition :

  • All the vitamins of the B complex as well as vitamin C;
  • But also vitamins D, E, K and beta-carotene (vitamin A);
  • Many minerals (including calcium and phosphorus in an almost perfect 1:1 ratio);
  • Enzymes and coenzymes, fatty acids of plant origin, carbohydrates and plant proteins.
  • Plus 22 amino acids - including the eight "essential" amino acids that the body cannot synthesize itself.

Why supplement your horse with pollen?

Although it is less well known than honey or royal jelly, pollen is nevertheless very rich in nutrients and therefore has many virtues. This real vitamin cocktail is particularly appreciated for its fortifying and revitalizing effects on the horse's body.

Among themany benefits that it can present in the form of a cure of food supplements, it is necessary to mention in particular its action :

  • Stimulating. Because it is rich in vitamins B, C and E, in minerals and trace elements, but also in iron, pollen is an excellent natural stimulant to give your horse a boost. Its vegetable protein content also makes it a good ally for your animal's muscle tone.
  • Digestive: pollen is composed of about 12% fiber. But its manufacturing process also makes it very interesting to regulate the intestinal function. The bees add saliva to it to form small balls, which are more easily transported. This saliva is loaded with enzymes and enriches the pollen with probiotics.
  • Antioxidant. Rich in beta-carotenes and polyphenols, bee pollen is very interesting to fight against the action of free radicals. Supplementing your horse with pollen is also a very good way to strengthen his immune systemespecially before the onset of winter.

Pollen also helps strengthen your horse's cardiovascular system. It contains rutosides, which have the particularity of supporting the capillaries and blood vessels.

It is also a good ally to soothe skin disorders that your horse may suffer from (such as summer dermatitis). Its content in amino acids and vitamins will protect the epidermis and facilitate the regeneration of its cells.

Can you give pollen to a horse with a pollen allergy?

Finally, pollen is an excellent way to fight against allergy... to pollen. As a preventive treatment, especially before spring, eating a little pollen can help you to gently desensitize your horse.

Be careful, however, to proceed step by step (starting with small doses), to ensure that your animal does not have a reaction and tolerates the supplement well. It is also advisable to consult your veterinarian before starting a course of treatment if you have a history of allergies or if your mare is pregnant.
