Understanding the needs of Breastfeeding Jument
The lactation period is demanding for mares, requiring particular attention to their diet to ensure the well-being of the mother and foal. The nutritional needs of lactating mares increase significantly to support milk production.
Increased Energy Requirements
During lactation, energy is the greatest nutritional need. Breastfeeding mare may require up to 50% more energy than its basic diet to support milk production. It is essential to gradually increase the intake of energy-rich foods, such as cereals and concentrates, while monitoring the body condition of the mare to avoid overweight.
High quality proteins
Proteins are fundamental to the production of quality milk. The protein requirements of the lactating mare increase significantly. It is recommended that high-quality protein sources such as soya or alfalfa be included in the diet to meet these increased needs.
Minerals and Vitamins
Calcium and Phosphorus
These two minerals are vital to the bone health of the mare and the development of the foal. A diet rich in calcium and phosphorus is crucial during lactation.
Vitamins A, D and E
Vitamin A is essential for reproductive health and vision, while vitamin D plays a key role in calcium absorption. Vitamin E, an antioxidant, supports the immune health of mare and foal.
Hydration
A nursing mare requires constant access to clean and fresh water. Milk production results in a significant increase in water requirements, and dehydration can quickly reduce the amount of milk produced.
